Union Minister J.P. Nadda on Tuesday welcomed the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP)’s decision to withdraw its proposed September 5 protest march, following the Supreme Court’s direction to quash FIRs registered against student protesters in several states.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday quashed FIRs registered against student protesters in Delhi, Bihar, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Assam in connection with demonstrations held between July 20 and 25. It also directed that similar cases registered across the country would not be pursued or investigated.
Addressing a press conference, Nadda said the government would honour assurances given to student representatives during discussions held on July 25.
He said he and Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh had met representatives of students participating in the protest at Jantar Mantar on July 25. According to Nadda, the government had assured the students that cases registered against protesters would be withdrawn and that no stringent action would be taken against them in future.
Nadda said the matter had also been discussed with governments in BJP-ruled states and that the Centre was committed to fulfilling the assurances. He welcomed the CJP spokesperson’s announcement that the September 5 protest would be called off.
“The growth and development of the youth is the biggest priority of the government,” Nadda said.
Earlier, CJP chief spokesperson Saurav Das said the organisation could not allow students’ futures to be affected because of their participation in the agitation.
Das also said the CJP had urged the government to assure the Supreme Court that compensation promised to families of students who died by suicide following the NEET paper leak would be paid within 90 days and would be “an honourable amount”.
According to Das, the government gave the assurance before the Supreme Court and said the funds would be transferred directly to the bank accounts of the affected families. He said the Court accepted the assurance and incorporated it into its order, giving it judicial sanctity.
The CJP had earlier announced a protest march from India Gate to the New Delhi Police Headquarters, alleging that the Centre had failed to honour commitments made to young people on July 25 after nationwide youth protests were withdrawn.
