Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao was arrested by police in Hyderabad on Tuesday after he attempted to travel to Nalgonda to meet BJP district president Nagam Varshit Reddy, whose residence was allegedly attacked by Congress workers.
Police had placed Rao under house arrest at his residence in Tarnaka and deployed personnel outside the house from the morning. When the BJP leader came out and attempted to leave for Nalgonda, police arrested him and shifted him to Gandhi Nagar Police Station.
Rao alleged that the Congress government was trying to prevent him from expressing solidarity with his party colleague. In a post on X, he said he wanted to meet Varshit Reddy after “Congress goons” allegedly ransacked his house and accused the government of disregarding democracy and the Constitution.
The BJP has alleged that Varshit Reddy’s family members, including his mother, were physically assaulted by Congress workers on Monday evening following a reported clash between supporters of the two parties. The party questioned the police action against Rao and demanded strict action against those allegedly responsible for the attack.
Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy condemned Rao’s arrest, describing it as a “blatant assault on democracy” and the second such house arrest in a week.
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar also criticised the action, alleging that those attacking BJP leaders were not being proceeded against while the state BJP president was arrested for standing with party workers.
“Under Congress rule, those who attack BJP get protection, while those who question the government face the police,” Sanjay Kumar said in a post on X, demanding Rao’s “immediate and unconditional release”.
The BJP leaders’ allegations regarding the attack on Varshit Reddy and his family could not be independently verified from the material provided.
