A 68-year-old woman stopped West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s convoy in Madhyamgram on Tuesday and sought his intervention over her failure to receive an old-age pension. Adhikari stopped his car, heard her complaint and directed the BJP’s Barasat organisational district president to forward her documents to his office for necessary action.
The woman, Swapna Das, lives in a rented one-room house near Srinagar Market in Ward 8 of Madhyamgram Municipality. She approached the Chief Minister after learning that he would be visiting the area.
Adhikari’s convoy had reached Jessore Road after a programme when Das, standing among BJP Mahila Morcha workers, moved towards the vehicle calling out, “Baba darao” (please stop). The Chief Minister stopped and rolled down the window.
When Adhikari asked what she wanted to convey, Das said she was not receiving money under the Annapurna Bhandar scheme. He clarified that her case would fall under the Baddhokhya Bhata old-age pension scheme and assured her that arrangements would be made for the allowance.
Das then placed her hand on the Chief Minister’s head and blessed him, saying she felt overwhelmed that he had listened to her.
Adhikari subsequently instructed Rajib Poddar, BJP Barasat organisational district president, who was present nearby, to send all documents related to Das’s pension application to his office.
Das’s family circumstances have added to her financial difficulties. Her husband left her 12 years ago. Her 31-year-old son, Shubhajit Das, holds an M.A. degree but remains unemployed and is currently bedridden due to serious illness. A relative provides financial assistance to the mother and son.
Das said she had repeatedly approached the municipality seeking old-age assistance but had not received any benefit. Security personnel had also prevented her from entering the programme venue because she did not have an invitation.
She ultimately waited outside and moved towards the convoy as it departed.
Speaking to reporters, Das said she was happy that the Chief Minister had heard her complaint and assured her of assistance. She expressed hope that the promised intervention would help ease the difficulties faced by her family.
