The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab on Tuesday staged protests in Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar and Bathinda against the participation of three BJP MPs in a tribute gathering for Sajjan Kumar, whom the party described as a convict in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
AAP leaders said the participation of BJP MPs Ramvir Bidhuri, Yogender Chandolia and Kamaljeet Sehrawat in Sajjan Kumar’s shraddhanjali sabha had deeply hurt the sentiments of Sikh families affected by the 1984 violence. The party demanded that the BJP take action against the three MPs.
In Amritsar, AAP workers protested outside the residence of Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh and attempted to gherao the premises. Police deployed heavy personnel and erected barricades to prevent the protesters from reaching the residence.
Addressing the protesters, AAP MLA Jeevan Jyot Kaur said the 1984 massacre remained an unhealed wound for Sikh families and questioned how BJP leaders could pay tribute to a person convicted in connection with the violence. She said the participation of BJP leaders had further hurt the families of victims who continue to live with the consequences of the tragedy.
In Jalandhar, AAP MLA Balkar Singh said the participation of senior BJP leaders at Sajjan Kumar’s tribute showed, in his view, where the BJP stood on justice for the victims of the 1984 violence. He said the pain of affected families should not be used for political purposes.
AAP leaders and elected representatives also held a protest in Ludhiana. MLA Daljit Singh Grewal said Punjab, as the land of Gurus, saints and martyrs, would not accept attempts to undermine the pain of Sikh families affected by the 1984 massacre. He alleged that both the BJP and Congress had repeatedly failed to respect Punjab’s sentiments.
In Bathinda, AAP workers raised slogans against the BJP and criticised what they described as the party’s proximity to individuals associated with the 1984 violence.
The party reiterated its demand for action against Bidhuri, Chandolia and Sehrawat and said it would continue raising issues concerning justice, dignity and accountability for victims and their families.
