Senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has accused the Shiromani Akali Dal of extending behind-the-scenes support to the ABVP in university elections, alleging that the move had exposed the party’s “true face” before the people of Punjab.
Randhawa said the Akali Dal, which had for years projected itself as a principal representative of Panthic politics, was now allegedly seeking the BJP’s support to protect its political position.
He alleged that the Akali Dal had repeatedly changed its political stance whenever power or political gains were involved. Punjab, he said, would not accept alliances in which political actions contradicted earlier positions.
Referring to Sukhbir Singh Badal, Randhawa claimed that the Akali Dal leadership had realised that rebuilding public trust in Punjab independently was difficult and was therefore once again moving closer to the BJP.
He pointed to the farmers’ agitation, saying the Akali Dal had earlier claimed to have distanced itself from the BJP but was now allegedly sending a different political message through its reported support for the BJP-backed ABVP in university electoral politics.
Randhawa said the Akali Dal had historically built its political influence around the Panthic vote but claimed that this support base was now moving away from the party. He alleged that people in Punjab had recognised what he described as the Akali Dal’s preference for political convenience over principles.
The Congress MP said his party would continue to stand with the people of Punjab and raise issues concerning farmers, youth and Punjabiyat.
He further alleged that the growing proximity between the Akali Dal and BJP showed that both parties were increasingly focused on preserving their political existence rather than addressing Punjab’s interests.
