The Miri Piri Khalsa March, which began from Sri Akal Takht Sahib, on Tuesday proceeded from Gurdwara Sahib Patshahi Dasvin, Alamgir Sahib, Ludhiana, towards its next destination, Gurdwara Degsar Sahib, Katana Sahib, as part of its second phase.
The march was taken forward in accordance with Sikh traditions in the presence of prominent Sikh personalities, including Sri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj, Takht Sri Damdama Sahib Jathedar Giani Tek Singh and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami.
During a religious gathering organised on the occasion, Giani Kawal Singh, Granthi Singh at Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib, delivered Gurbani-based discourse and urged the sangat to lead their lives according to Gurmat principles.
Addressing the gathering, Dhami said the creation of Sri Akal Takht Sahib by the sixth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib, connected the Sikh community with the principle of Miri-Piri. He said the march had been organised to reinforce awareness of this principle among the Sikh sangat.
Dhami called for greater unity under the guidance of Sri Akal Takht Sahib to address issues confronting the Sikh community. Referring to Sikh prisoners, he said Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana had remained on death row for a long period without a decision on his case, while Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara had not been granted parole to meet his ailing mother.
He said the government’s approach towards demands for the release of Sikh prisoners had caused a sense of alienation among Sikhs and termed it an injustice. He appealed to the Sikh community to overcome differences and unite on issues concerning the Panth.
Dhami also urged parents to connect their children with Gurbani and Sikh history so that they could remain away from harmful influences and avoid substance abuse.
Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj said the Sikh community had faced difficult periods in the past but had overcome them by maintaining faith in the Guru and remaining in high spirits. He identified growing drug abuse and efforts by forces opposed to Sikh principles to weaken Sikh values as major challenges.
He appealed to people to remain cautious about those who, he alleged, unnecessarily create doubts among the sangat regarding Guru Ghar services and offerings. He also stressed the collective responsibility of protecting Punjab’s land, language, heritage and younger generation.
Appealing to families settled abroad, Gargajj urged them not to sell their properties in Punjab and said they should not consider permanently abandoning the state.
The march has received an enthusiastic response from the sangat at various locations. In Ludhiana, young people joined the procession on motorcycles carrying placards highlighting the supremacy of Sri Akal Takht Sahib. Several youth also pledged to maintain their Sikh identity and stay away from drugs.
A bus carrying historic weapons associated with the Sikh Gurus, which is accompanying the march, has also attracted considerable interest among devotees.
SGPC junior vice-president Baldev Singh Kalyan, members Sukhjit Singh Kadian, Pritpal Singh Pali, Raghbir Singh Saharanmajra, Charan Singh Alamgir, Kawal Singh Badal and Bibi Rajinder Kaur, former minister Hira Singh Gabria, senior Akali leader Maheshinder Singh Grewal, former MP Ranjit Singh Dhillon and several other Sikh leaders and office-bearers were present.
Others attending included Halqa in-charge Harpreet Singh, Nakodar Halqa in-charge Rajkanwal Singh, Sukh Darshan Singh, district president Bhupinder Singh Jinda, Gurcharan Singh Gogi, secretary Gurinder Singh Mathrewal, additional secretary Bhagwant Singh Dhangera, Baba Anhad Naad Singh Ludhiana, Baba Harinder Singh, Giani Gurbakhsh Singh UK, Baba Bhupinder Singh, Mata Vipanpreet Kaur, Chand Singh Dalla, Gurjit Singh Lehra, manager Sarbdayal Singh, Gurcharan Singh, in-charge Gurbhag Singh and head preacher Bhai Jagdev Singh, besides a large number of devotees.
