Hollywood star Brad Pitt says his upcoming survival drama ‘Heart of the Beast’ strengthened his belief in the extraordinary bond between humans and dogs, describing the relationship at the centre of the film as deeply moving.
Directed by David Ayer, the film follows Special Forces officer James Belmont, played by Pitt, and his combat dog Odin after a plane crash leaves them stranded in the Alaskan wilderness. As they struggle against extreme conditions and fight to survive, their loyalty to each other becomes their greatest source of strength.
Pitt said the emotional depth of the human-dog relationship was one of the main reasons he was drawn to the project.
“When I first picked up the script for this movie, I read it and it just really, really moved me. That bond between human and dog, dog and human, it’s something quite incredible,” he said.
Although the film is presented as a survival story, Pitt said its emotional core is a love story built around loyalty and unconditional affection.
“This is on its surface a survival movie but underneath its surface it’s a love story. The experience cemented what I know to be true about our relationship with dogs, and their relationship with us. It’s that intense loyalty and their love is unconditional. We are less alone in the world, because of our dogs,” he said.
Pitt was also attracted by the opportunity to reunite with Ayer, with whom he previously worked on ‘Fury’.
Ayer said James and Odin share a bond in which neither is willing to abandon the other, adding that both would readily sacrifice themselves for the other.
The film also stars Anna Lambe, while JK Simmons plays Watkins. Simmons said he was deeply absorbed by the characters and highlighted the emotional depth of the story, describing it as having “a deep, deep heart”.
‘Heart of the Beast’ is written by Cameron Alexander and produced by Olivia Hamilton, Marty Bowen, David Ayer and Brad Pitt. Damien Chazelle, Scott Lumpkin, Cameron Alexander, Chris Long, Pete Chiappetta, Anthony Tittanegro, Andrew Lary, Sophie Cassidy and Zack Conroy serve as executive producers.
Produced by Paramount Pictures in association with Domain Entertainment and Gulfstream Pictures, the film is scheduled to release in cinemas across India on September 25, 2026.
