A delegation of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Monday met representatives of the Nepal Prime Minister’s Office to discuss relief efforts for people affected by the recent natural disaster in the country and offered assistance for humanitarian services.
The meeting was facilitated by Pritam Singh. The SGPC delegation comprised members Bhai Rajinder Singh Mehta, Bhai Gurcharan Singh Grewal and advocate Bhagwant Singh Siyalka, along with SGPC Deputy Secretary Azad Deep Singh.
During the meeting, the delegation sought detailed information about the situation following the natural disaster, the relief operations being undertaken by the Nepal government and the immediate requirements of affected communities.
The SGPC representatives specifically sought to ascertain which relief materials were currently most needed so that assistance could be provided according to the requirements on the ground.
Speaking from Nepal, SGPC member Bhai Gurcharan Singh Grewal said the committee was committed to extending all possible assistance to people affected by the disaster. He said further relief measures would be undertaken based on information and requirements communicated by the Nepal government.
Grewal said serving humanity during natural disasters and other crises had remained a longstanding tradition of the SGPC, with priority given to reaching assistance to people in need.
He said representatives of the Nepal government thanked the SGPC delegation for its offer of humanitarian assistance and shared details of the framework being prepared for relief operations.
The SGPC, he added, would undertake relief activities with the consent of the Nepal government and in accordance with the programme and requirements finalised by the authorities.
Grewal said that, following directions from SGPC president advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, the delegation had conveyed an open offer to the Nepal government to undertake humanitarian services and sought the necessary approvals.
According to the Nepal government representatives, the complete framework for relief operations would be shared with the SGPC shortly, following which the committee would undertake assistance accordingly.
Angad Singh from Nepal and Pritam Singh, secretary of Gurdwara Singh Sabha, were also present at the meeting.
