Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday reiterated India’s support for all efforts aimed at achieving peace in Ukraine, saying that humanity must move from an “endless war” towards an end to the conflict.
Modi made the remarks during a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek. He noted that the two leaders had previously discussed the situation in Ukraine, with Putin briefing him in detail on various aspects of the conflict during their last meeting.
“As you know, India supports all efforts towards peace and will continue to do so. Every day spent in war pushes humanity backwards, while every step taken towards peace fills humanity with a new hope and enthusiasm. We must move from an endless war towards an end to the war. This is essential for the well-being of humanity,” Modi said in his opening remarks.
Describing peace as a “call of humanity”, the Prime Minister said India’s consistent message had been that all issues should be resolved peacefully and at the earliest.
“The land of Gandhi and the land of Buddha has one message: to follow the path of peace,” Modi said, adding that he looked forward to discussing the issue with Putin.
The Prime Minister also said Indians were eagerly awaiting Putin’s visit to New Delhi for the BRICS Summit next month. He said the Russian President’s visit would further strengthen bilateral ties and deepen dialogue and cooperation within BRICS.
The meeting followed External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to Moscow last week, where he met Putin on August 24 and conveyed a “personal message” from Modi.
Jaishankar had also co-chaired the 27th Session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC) with Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov.
Putin, during his meeting with Jaishankar, had said the minister’s visit reflected the depth of India-Russia relations and highlighted cooperation across governmental, parliamentary and economic spheres. He also noted that bilateral trade had increased this year.
The Russian President credited Modi’s personal attention to strengthening bilateral ties and expressed hope of meeting him again soon.
During Monday’s meeting, Putin highlighted cooperation in areas including energy, fertilisers, nuclear power and high-technology sectors. He said Russia was increasing fertiliser supplies to meet the requirements of Indian agriculture and was prepared to expand cooperation further.
Jaishankar told Putin that he had a positive report on economic cooperation to share following the intergovernmental commission meeting, covering areas such as economic ties, nuclear energy and fertiliser supplies. He described the India-Russia relationship as a “strong, robust bilateral partnership”.
