The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday questioned the Election Commission of India (ECI) over the exclusion of nearly 47.7 lakh electors from Delhi’s draft electoral roll following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), with Delhi AAP president Saurabh Bharadwaj asking whether the exercise implied that a third of the Capital’s voters were ineligible.
Bharadwaj also questioned how the Delhi government led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta could have been formed around one-and-a-half years ago if such a large number of people were allegedly not eligible voters. He demanded the resignation of the government and fresh elections.
Speaking to IANS, Bharadwaj said, “The level of their shamelessness has reached the point where they have deleted the names of one-third of Delhi’s voters. Does that mean one-third of the people in Delhi were Bangladeshis?”
“Those who are choosing the MPs and MLAs, are they not voters? The Rekha Gupta government, which was formed one-and-a-half years ago, were one-third of the people not voters? Then resign and conduct the election process again,” he said.
Bharadwaj further alleged that the Delhi government was “anti-poor” and claimed that the exercise could deprive economically weaker sections of access to various government facilities.
Delhi’s draft electoral roll published on Monday contains around 97.5 lakh electors whose enumeration forms were received and digitised during the SIR exercise. Around 47.7 lakh electors have not been included in the draft roll.
The Delhi Chief Electoral Officer said those excluded can submit claims until September 30 through Form 6 along with supporting documents. The final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on November 4.
According to the revised schedule, claims and objections will be examined and the process of issuing notices and disposing of claims will continue until October 29.
The house-to-house SIR exercise began on June 30 and concluded on August 17. Enumeration forms of around 67.18 per cent of Delhi’s 1,45,10,299 electors were digitised.
The remaining electors were categorised as “uncollectable” under Absent, Shifted, Dead, Duplicate and Others (ASDDO) and were not included in the draft roll.
