The Punjab Congress Election Manifesto Committee on Monday announced a state-wide grassroots consultation campaign to gather public feedback and prepare a comprehensive “people’s manifesto” for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
The decision was taken at a detailed strategy meeting of the committee at the Punjab Congress Bhawan. The consultation exercise will formally begin from Amritsar, following which committee members will visit every district in the state.
In each district, the committee plans to hold full-day interactions with District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents, MPs, MLAs, senior party leaders and candidates who contested the 2022 Assembly elections. The consultations will focus on gathering ground-level feedback, identifying local issues and incorporating public priorities into the manifesto.
The committee will also invite written suggestions and views from journalists, intellectuals, civil society organisations and members of the public, with the stated objective of ensuring that the manifesto reflects the aspirations and concerns of Punjabis.
Addressing the media after the meeting, committee leaders said the party viewed the upcoming elections in the context of what they described as a broader ideological battle over the Constitution and equality.
Echoing the position articulated by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, they alleged that the RSS-BJP combine was opposed to constitutional values and equality, while the Congress stood for protecting the Constitution framed under the leadership of Babasaheb Dr B.R. Ambedkar.
The leaders also condemned the alleged “shuddhi-karan” (purification) ritual conducted at the venue of a Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge programme and described it as discriminatory. They questioned the registration of an FIR against Rahul Gandhi after he raised the issue, alleging that the BJP government was using “vendetta politics” against the Opposition.
On Punjab’s political landscape, the committee leaders alleged that the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and its president Sukhbir Singh Badal were working in tacit coordination with the BJP. They claimed that voters in Punjab had recognised the alleged understanding and expressed confidence that the Congress would return to power with a decisive mandate in 2027.
The meeting was chaired by Manifesto Committee Chairman Dr Amar Singh, MP from Fatehgarh Sahib. Co-Chairpersons Gurjeet Singh Aujla, MP from Amritsar, former minister Pargat Singh, former MLA Hardial Singh Kamboj and senior leader Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria were also present.
