Forty passengers and crew members were safely evacuated and frisked after an Air India Express flight from Dammam to Delhi was diverted to Ahmedabad on Monday following the discovery of a handwritten bomb threat inside the aircraft, officials said.
Air India Express flight IX-170, which departed Dammam in Saudi Arabia at 10:25 a.m., was diverted to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport after the First Officer found a tissue paper in the aircraft’s bathroom carrying a threatening message.
According to the Airport Police Station, the tissue reportedly bore the words “Bomb RED 4:30” in English, along with a drawing of a bag.
The aircraft landed at Ahmedabad airport at 4:27 p.m. and was parked on the Terminal 2 taxiway. Police and security agencies immediately initiated the prescribed security protocols.
Police Inspector A.D. Chavda, along with personnel, reached the airport and supervised the evacuation. Police said 32 passengers and eight crew members — four crew members and four air hostesses — were safely brought out of the aircraft and frisked.
The passengers and crew were subsequently checked by the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), while security agencies also began interrogating those present. No suspicious object had been found inside the aircraft at the time of the report.
The aircraft was moved to an isolated area as security checks and other prescribed procedures continued. Airport authorities also carried out necessary security and sanitation measures.
Police said an investigation was underway to establish the origin of the threatening message. The flight is expected to be allowed to proceed to Delhi after the security checks and investigation are completed.
The process of registering an offence in connection with the incident was also underway.
