Six people from Rajasthan were killed and around 20 others injured after a pickup truck carrying pilgrims collided head-on with a truck in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj district early Monday morning, police said.
The victims, all from Karauli district, were travelling to Soron to perform the ritual immersion of ashes and take a holy dip in the Ganga when the accident occurred near Mohanpura in the Kotwali Sadar area, opposite Shiv Inter College.
According to preliminary information, the collision took place around 4:30 a.m. The impact was severe, killing six passengers on the spot. The deceased comprised three women and three men.
Around 20 others were injured, including seven children, six women and seven men. Nine injured persons, who were reportedly in critical condition, were referred to Aligarh after receiving initial treatment at Kasganj District Hospital. The remaining injured are undergoing treatment at the district hospital.
Local residents rushed to the spot after hearing the crash and helped with rescue operations. Police and administrative teams also reached the site and rescued passengers trapped inside the mangled pickup before shifting the injured to hospitals by ambulance.
Doctors declared six people dead. Police took custody of the bodies, completed the necessary inquest proceedings and sent them for post-mortem examinations.
The truck was reportedly carrying animal feed from Shahjahanpur to Jaipur. Preliminary information suggests that it may have been travelling on the wrong side of the road. Police are also investigating whether the pickup driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
Both vehicles have been impounded and an investigation is underway.
The deceased were identified as Umesh (26), son of Bablu, from Revai village in Karauli; Prem (50), wife of Tejram, from Nathauli ka Pura under Suroth police station; Nehru (25), son of Ramkhiladi, from Nathauli ka Pura; Reena (32), wife of Karamveer, from Salempur Kala in Bharatpur; Anjali (26), wife of Manish, from Revai under Mahua Ibrahimpur police station; and Ramjit/Ranjit (33), son of Tejram, from Nathauli ka Pura under Hindaun police station in Karauli.
The accident triggered grief among the families of the victims in Rajasthan, with relatives travelling to Kasganj. Police and district administration officials are coordinating medical treatment for the injured and assisting the bereaved families.
