US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Tuesday described the planned co-production of Javelin missiles in India as a major step forward in the defence partnership between the United States and India, saying the initiative would expand opportunities for American companies while strengthening India’s manufacturing capabilities.
Gor welcomed the collaboration between Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) for the co-production of the Javelin All Up Round (AUR).
“A major step forward for the U.S.-India defense partnership. This collaboration between Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and Tata Advanced Systems Limited will create new opportunities for U.S. companies, strengthen America’s defense-industrial base, and boost India’s manufacturing capabilities,” Gor said in a post on X.
TASL and the Javelin Joint Venture (JJV), formed by Raytheon, an RTX business, and Lockheed Martin, have signed a memorandum of understanding for Javelin AUR co-production in India, according to a statement issued by Lockheed Martin.
Following an evaluation of multiple companies based on their capabilities and expertise, TASL was selected by the JJV as the prime partner for future in-country co-production efforts.
Under the agreement, TASL and JJV will explore establishing a facility in India for the final assembly and integration of Javelin AURs, as well as manufacturing components. The initiative is expected to support future Javelin system production, create opportunities for Indian industry and contribute to regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.
The production arrangement will involve sub-assembly kits being manufactured at Lockheed Martin’s facility in Troy, Alabama, and guidance electronics units (GEUs) at Raytheon’s facility in Tucson, Arizona. These components will then be shipped to India for final assembly and integration.
The companies said the initiative would also support the development of a skilled defence workforce in India while sustaining American jobs in the domestic supply chain through multiyear production.
Gor had last month met National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in New Delhi to discuss strengthening strategic cooperation between the two countries.
“Our close partnership with India is vital to addressing global security challenges. The United States and India share many of the same goals and our engagement continues to grow,” Gor said after the meeting.
