Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Monday said no one was above the law and asserted that Punjab Congress President and MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring would face legal action over alleged casteist remarks against the Dalit community.
Cheema said the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government would comply with the directions of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) concerning the allegations against Warring and ensure that the law takes its course.
Addressing the issue, Cheema said casteist or colourist remarks that insult the Dalit community would not be tolerated, regardless of the political position of the person making them.
He said the state government would take action against Warring in accordance with the law and the orders of the NCSC. “No one is above the law,” Cheema maintained, asserting that the government would not allow political considerations to interfere with the legal process.
The Finance Minister further said that if required for the purpose of investigation, the Punjab Police would not hesitate to arrest Warring.
Cheema accused the Congress of attempting to create an atmosphere of hatred in Punjab and said such politics would not be accepted by the people of the state.
He said the Punjab government was committed to protecting the dignity and rights of the Dalit community and would take appropriate action against anyone making objectionable remarks based on caste or colour.
The minister alleged that attempts to divide society through caste-based remarks were contrary to Punjab’s social fabric and traditions of harmony. He said the people of Punjab and the state government would not allow such efforts to succeed.
Cheema reiterated that the government would follow the legal process and ensure that the matter was dealt with strictly in accordance with the applicable law and the directions issued by the competent authorities.
