The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Tuesday welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to quash FIRs against student protesters, saying it could not allow cases arising from the July 20-25 protests to jeopardise the future of young people.
The Supreme Court directed that FIRs registered against student protesters in Delhi, Bihar, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Assam and other parts of the country in connection with the protests during the period should not be pursued or investigated.
CJP chief spokesperson Saurav Das said the party had also decided to withdraw its proposed September 5 protest march in view of the assurances given by the Union government and the Supreme Court’s order.
Speaking to reporters, Das described the resignation of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on July 25 as a “very big victory” for the country’s youth.
Recalling the joint press conference held with Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh on July 25, Das said the CJP had raised two principal demands—compensation for families whose children died by suicide in connection with the NEET paper leak and withdrawal of FIRs registered against protesters, youth and students across the country.
He said the party had subsequently held discussions with a high-level government delegation and that notifications were issued in several states assuring that FIRs against student protesters would be withdrawn and no further action would be taken against them.
However, Das said the Union government’s assurances regarding compensation for families of NEET victims and withdrawal of FIRs registered by Delhi Police and other central agencies had not been received in the required form until Tuesday.
“The youth have an entire future ahead of them, and we could not let that get affected due to FIRs and police action,” Das said.
He said the CJP had also sought an assurance before the Supreme Court that compensation of an appropriate amount would be paid within 90 days and credited directly to the affected families’ bank accounts.
According to Das, the government gave the assurance before the Supreme Court on Tuesday, and the court incorporated it into its order, giving it judicial sanctity.
Announcing the withdrawal of the September 5 demonstration, Das said the CJP had decided to call off its proposed peaceful march from India Gate to the new Police Headquarters, claiming that the government had accepted all its demands.
