Security forces on Monday busted a suspected terror hideout in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district and recovered an AK-47 rifle, pistol, grenade and ammunition, officials said.
The operation was jointly conducted by the J&K Police, 44 Rashtriya Rifles of the Army and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in the Naikpora Memender area following specific intelligence inputs.
During searches in an orchard, the security team located and busted the hideout. Officials said the recovery included one AK-47 rifle, two AK-47 magazines, 60 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, one pistol, one grenade and six rounds of 9 mm ammunition.
“Further investigation has been launched to ascertain the origin and intended use of the recovered weapons,” officials said.
The recovery comes amid intensified counter-terrorism operations across South Kashmir, particularly in Shopian, Kulgam and Anantnag, where security forces have recently conducted cordon-and-search operations based on intelligence regarding militant movements.
In Kulgam, joint operations have been undertaken in the Akhal Devsar and Guddar forest areas with the deployment of advanced surveillance equipment and specialised forces. Earlier encounters in the district during the summer also resulted in the killing of terrorists.
Operations were similarly conducted in Anantnag’s Achabal and Kokernag areas, including the Ahlan Gagarmandu forest, following intelligence inputs about suspected terrorist movements. These operations led to exchanges of fire.
In Shopian, anti-terror operations have also resulted in the killing of several Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operatives, including Zakir Ganai, following prolonged engagements.
Northern Army Commander Lt General Pratik Sharma recently visited South Kashmir to review the security grid, operational preparedness and the use of advanced technology for intelligence gathering and surveillance.
Joint control centres and coordination mechanisms involving the Army, J&K Police and CRPF have also been strengthened across South Kashmir.
Meanwhile, security forces are conducting extensive cordon-and-search operations in the higher reaches of Doda, Kishtwar, Kathua, Rajouri, Poonch, Ramban, Udhampur and Reasi districts in the Jammu division following reports of suspected terrorist movement in the mountainous areas.
