The Akhil Bharatiya Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh (ABRSM), a teachers’ organisation, has demanded an independent Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into alleged irregularities in PhD admissions at Jadavpur University.
The organisation submitted a deputation to the university’s Vice-Chancellor on Monday, seeking an impartial investigation into allegations concerning the PhD admission process in the Department of International Relations.
In its letter, the ABRSM referred to an audio recording that it said had come to its notice and alleged that an attempt was made to facilitate the admission of Anustup Chakraborty, reportedly associated with the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), to the PhD programme.
The organisation alleged that Chakraborty, despite reportedly being placed 24th on the merit list, was allegedly sought to be included among the top three candidates.
The letter also raised questions over references in the purported audio conversations to Prof. Partha Pratim Ray, described by the organisation as a CPI(M) leader and subsequently reported to be the president of the Jadavpur University Teachers Association (JUTA).
The ABRSM, however, qualified its allegations, stating that if the audio recording is genuine and accurately represents the conversations, its contents raise concerns about the transparency and integrity of the university’s PhD admission process.
The organisation said any attempt to improperly influence or manipulate admissions would undermine merit and fairness and potentially damage the university’s academic credibility.
It has sought an independent investigation by the CBI or another appropriate central investigating agency to determine whether any attempt was made to alter, influence or manipulate the merit-based admission process.
“In view of the seriousness of the allegations and their potential impact on the academic integrity and reputation of Jadavpur University, we request your good office to take immediate and appropriate steps to ensure that the truth is established through an independent, impartial and credible investigation,” the letter said.
The organisation also urged the university to ensure that the investigation neither protects nor targets any individual and upholds the principles of transparency, merit and fairness.
