Kishtwar rape-murder victim’s father says no case should be filed without his consent

The father of the 15-year-old girl who was allegedly raped and murdered in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar has said he is satisfied with the investigation being handed over to the J&K Crime Branch and appealed that no legal case concerning the matter be filed or pursued without his consent.

In a video circulating on social media, the victim’s father is heard saying that he had learnt that someone had filed a case in Jammu and requested that no such proceedings be initiated without his permission and thumb impression.

“Maine Suna Hai Ki Kisi Ne Jammu Mein Case File Kiya Hai. Mere Anguthe Ke Bagair Koi Case File Na Kare (I heard that someone in Jammu has filed a case. But nothing without my permission),” he is heard saying.

The father also said that the investigation had been transferred to the Crime Branch and that he was satisfied with the development.

Another purported audio recording circulating on social media features a conversation between the victim’s father and advocate Deepika Singh Rajawat, who has reportedly filed or is associated with a petition concerning the case.

During the reported conversation, the father allegedly requested that no case be pursued on his behalf, reiterating that the matter had already been handed over to the Crime Branch.

“My case has been handed over to the Crime Branch, and I am satisfied with that. Whatever you will do, you would be responsible for that,” he is heard saying.

The authenticity of the videos and the purported conversation has not been confirmed or denied by officials so far.

The alleged rape and murder of the minor girl in the Chatroo area of Kishtwar on August 20 triggered widespread outrage, with people across social, religious and political groups demanding stringent and exemplary punishment for those responsible.

The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) has also decided to investigate the case. It issued notices to the J&K Chief Secretary, Director General of Police and Senior Superintendent of Police, Kishtwar, requiring responses within five days from August 25.

The Crime Branch probe is now the focus of the investigation as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the girl’s death.
