A BJP delegation led by party MP Bansuri Swaraj on Saturday submitted a complaint to the New Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police, alleging that several Opposition MPs hurt Hindu religious sentiments through a skit staged at the Parliament premises.
The complaint names Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav and Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad among those accused by the BJP delegation. BJP MLAs Anil Sharma and Karnail Singh were also part of the delegation.
The controversy arose after Purnia MP Pappu Yadav appeared dressed as a monk at the Parliament complex on Friday and enacted a performance related to allegations of misuse of donations made to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Several Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Awadhesh Prasad, participated in the act.
Speaking to IANS, Bansuri Swaraj said the performance was not a protest but a mockery of Sanatan culture, the saint community and Indian traditions. She said while the Constitution protects the right to protest, it does not permit actions that hurt the sentiments of any community.
Swaraj said the BJP delegation had approached the police seeking registration of an FIR and an investigation into the matter.
BJP MLA Anil Sharma alleged that the use of saffron attire during the performance was an attempt to portray the saint community in a negative manner. He said the allegations related to temple donations were already being examined by an SIT in Ayodhya and legal proceedings were underway.
BJP MLA Karnail Singh also demanded action, alleging that the performance was aimed at defaming Sanatan Dharma and using religious issues for political purposes.
In its complaint submitted to DCP Sachin Sharma, the BJP delegation alleged that the performance within the Parliament complex used religious symbols and practices in a manner that was disrespectful to Hindu beliefs.
The complaint stated that the act created an impression that Hindu priests, devotees of Lord Ram and those associated with religious traditions were involved in misappropriating temple donations, which the complainants said caused hurt among members of the Hindu community.
Similar complaints have also been filed against Pappu Yadav in Delhi and by seers and lawyers in Varanasi, alleging that the performance insulted Sanatan Dharma.
