India scripted history in para athletics at the Commonwealth Games 2026 on Saturday as Soman Rana won the country’s first-ever gold medal in the Men’s Shot Put F57 event, while Shubham Juyal secured silver to complete a memorable one-two finish.
The achievement marked India’s maiden gold medal in the Commonwealth Games Men’s Shot Put F57 category and also the nation’s first double podium finish in the event.
Soman produced a winning throw of 13.40 metres in his second attempt, a mark that remained unmatched throughout the competition. Shubham saved his best effort for the final round, recording 13.28 metres with his sixth and last throw to move into the silver medal position.
Cameroon’s Cedric Idriss Lekezo Azamdzi won the bronze medal with a best throw of 12.57 metres.
Soman began the final strongly with an opening attempt of 13.38 metres before improving it to 13.40 metres in his second throw. Although his third attempt was a foul, his remaining efforts of 13.14m, 13.17m and 13.11m were enough to maintain his lead.
Shubham displayed consistent performance throughout the event. After opening with 13.08m and following it with 12.42m, he improved to 13.27m in the third round before eventually sealing silver with his final throw of 13.28m.
The gold medal added another landmark achievement to Soman Rana’s career. The former Indian Army personnel overcame a life-changing mine blast injury suffered during service in Jammu and Kashmir in 2006. After rehabilitation, he took up para athletics and went on to become a leading F57 shot put athlete, winning medals at major international competitions.
For Shubham Juyal, the silver medal marked a remarkable comeback story. The Roorkee-born athlete lost a leg in a motorcycle accident in 2022, ending his ambition of joining the Army as an officer. During rehabilitation, he turned to para sports and progressed through competitions, representing India at the Commonwealth Games stage.
