West Bengal Police on Friday sealed the residence of Birbhum-based stone quarry owner Tulu Mondal, a day after authorities recovered unaccounted cash worth Rs 28 crore and around 15 kg of gold from the house of his close relative Minar Mondal.
The seizure was made during a police operation at Minar Mondal’s residence in Birbhum district. The recovered gold has been estimated to be worth around Rs 22 crore at current market rates.
According to police sources, Minar Mondal, who had allegedly gone absconding after the recovery, was later questioned and claimed that the seized cash and gold belonged to Tulu Mondal. He allegedly told investigators that he had only stored the valuables at his residence. Police also said Minar disclosed that some of the recovered gold biscuits were illegally sourced from Dubai.
Following the seizure, a large police team reached Tulu Mondal’s residence in Suri and carried out a night-long search operation. At the time of the raid, only the caretaker and domestic staff were present at the house, while family members were reportedly absent.
Early Friday morning, police officials removed the caretaker and other staff members from the premises before sealing the main entrance of the residence. Police have not disclosed details of any items recovered during the search at Tulu Mondal’s house.
Tulu Mondal was earlier known for his close association with former Trinamool Congress Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal during the previous Mamata Banerjee-led government. His name had also surfaced during the cattle smuggling investigation, in which Anubrata Mondal was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in 2022.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had also examined Tulu Mondal in 2022 and conducted searches at his residence and office in connection with allegations of illegal stone mining.
Meanwhile, Minar Mondal, who worked as a bus driver in a state-run transport corporation, was also associated with Tulu Mondal’s stone quarry business, according to local accounts.
