India’s Seema Kaliramna added another memorable chapter to her sporting journey by winning the bronze medal in the women’s discus throw at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, capping years of perseverance, personal sacrifice and determination.
The 27-year-old athlete secured her maiden major international medal with a best throw of 58.65 metres, contributing to India’s growing medal tally in athletics. Despite managing only two valid attempts in six rounds, Seema held her nerve to finish on the podium after several throws were ruled invalid when the discus struck the side netting.
Her success carries significance beyond the medal. Seema is not only an elite athlete but also a mother to four-year-old Rudra and is pursuing a PhD in Physical Education at Chaudhary Bansi Lal University (CBLU), Bhiwani, while balancing family responsibilities with competitive sport.
Motherhood marked a turning point in her athletics career. Before the birth of her son in 2022, Seema’s personal best stood at 48.08 metres. After an 11-month competitive break, she returned to the field in 2024, steadily improving her performances to 57.19 metres before recording a personal best of 59.73 metres at the Indian Championships in Bhubaneswar earlier this year.
Seema is coached by her husband, Ravinder Kaliramna, himself a distinguished discus thrower and former gold medallist at the Indian Under-18 and Under-20 Championships.
Her road to international success was far from smooth. A serious knee injury had sidelined her for more than three years, forcing an extended rehabilitation before she returned to national competition.
The comeback proved remarkable. Seema captured gold at the 2025 National Games, followed it with the national title, and continued her winning run by claiming gold at the 2026 South Asian Athletics Championships. Her consistent performances culminated in qualification for both the 2026 Commonwealth Games and the upcoming Asian Games.
The bronze medal in Glasgow now stands as the biggest achievement of her career and an inspiring example of resilience, balancing academics, motherhood and elite sport at the highest level.
