The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has changed the investigating officer handling the fresh probe into the rape and murder case of a woman junior doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, following allegations raised by the victim’s family over the earlier investigation.
The previous investigating officer, Seema Pahuja, has been relieved of the responsibility and replaced by Sandeepani Garg, who appeared before the trial court at Sealdah in central Kolkata on Thursday.
The development comes after the victim’s parents had alleged that the earlier investigation was not conducted properly and had sought a change of the investigating officer.
The CBI on Thursday also submitted a status report before the court regarding the progress of the fresh investigation. Garg met the victim’s mother, who was present during the proceedings, and requested her to have faith in the probe being conducted by the central agency.
During the hearing, the CBI counsel informed the court that around 1,000 pages of documents related to the case were being examined as part of the fresh investigation. The statements of the victim’s parents have also been recorded, the counsel said.
The body of the junior doctor was recovered from a seminar room inside the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital premises on the morning of August 8, 2024. She had allegedly been raped and murdered the previous night, triggering widespread protests across the country.
The Kolkata Police had arrested civic volunteer Sanjay Roy in connection with the case. Subsequently, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation to the CBI. The central agency, however, did not arrest any other accused during its earlier probe.
A Sealdah trial court later convicted Sanjay Roy, who was sentenced to life imprisonment. However, the victim’s parents expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation, claiming that more people were involved in the crime.
Earlier this year, the Calcutta High Court ordered a fresh investigation into the matter, following which the CBI resumed the probe.
