Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Thursday announced that an all-party meeting will be held on August 2 to discuss the ongoing Cauvery water dispute and decide the state’s future course of action.
The meeting will take place at the Chief Minister’s official residence, Krishna, in Bengaluru. Shivakumar said invitations have been sent to former Chief Ministers, MPs from the Cauvery basin region, leaders of political parties and floor leaders.
Speaking to reporters in Delhi, Shivakumar said Karnataka was presenting its case before the concerned authorities and senior officials were making submissions on behalf of the state.
“We will discuss the future course of action in the all-party meeting,” he said, adding that he had been closely monitoring developments related to the dispute.
The Chief Minister said leaders across political lines, including Union Ministers Pralhad Joshi and V. Somanna, former Chief Ministers, and BJP MPs Basavaraj Bommai and Jagadish Shettar, had extended support in protecting Karnataka’s interests.
Shivakumar said there should be no confrontation between states and stressed the need to respect the law and sentiments of people on both sides of the dispute.
“We do not want confrontation. There is a law of the land, and we must respect each other and the sentiments of the people on both sides. This is one country,” he said.
The announcement comes amid growing tensions over the Cauvery water-sharing issue after the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee directed Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu for 15 days.
The directive has led to protests in several parts of Karnataka, with Kannada organisations and farmers’ groups urging the state government to safeguard drinking water requirements.
Meanwhile, responding to criticism over the delay in Karnataka Cabinet expansion, Shivakumar took a dig at BJP state president B.Y. Vijayendra and former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, but did not provide any timeline for the expansion.
