The long-pending issue of desilting the final stretch of Sakki Nallah has moved towards resolution after the Indian Army granted a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for carrying out the required work.
Ajnala MLA Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal said the approval was secured following efforts to facilitate desilting of the five-kilometre stretch from village Lodhi Gujjar to the Ravi River, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Indian Army.
Dhaliwal said the absence of permission had delayed desilting work in the stretch, leading to heavy accumulation of silt and affecting the natural flow and drainage capacity of the nallah. He said the issue had become a major concern, particularly during the monsoon season, due to the risk of waterlogging and flooding.
He informed that a meeting was held with senior Indian Army officers, including Brigadier S.S. Chhillar (SM), Brigadier Sukhbir Singh (SM) and Commanding Officer Antony Robins D, during which the Army granted approval for the desilting operation.
Dhaliwal said the work would begin on a large scale once the water level recedes. He added that clearing the accumulated silt would improve water flow and help protect agricultural land, residential areas of economically weaker sections, labourers and the general public from flood-related damage.
He said cooperation from the Indian Army had helped resolve the issue and cleared the way for timely completion of the desilting work.
Superintending Engineer Mahesh Singh, Executive Engineer Ankush Chaudhary and Junior Engineer Kamalpreet Singh were also present during the meeting.
