A Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Court in Chennai on Thursday sentenced gangster Chhota Rajan to seven years’ imprisonment after convicting him in a case related to obtaining an Indian passport through forged documents and a false identity.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 55,000 on Rajan, whose real name is Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje, after finding him guilty of offences including cheating, forgery, impersonation and using fabricated documents as genuine.
Rajan, who is currently lodged in Tihar Jail, New Delhi, is already serving a life sentence in another criminal case. The seven-year punishment relates specifically to the passport fraud case investigated by the CBI.
According to the probe agency, the case was registered on March 19, 2002, after allegations emerged that Rajan had fraudulently obtained a passport from the Regional Passport Office in Chennai by submitting fake identity and residential documents.
The CBI investigation found that Rajan had applied for the passport under the name “Vijaya Kadam” and allegedly submitted fabricated records, including a school transfer certificate, ration card and other documents to establish his identity, age and address.
During the investigation, the agency established that the person who applied as Vijaya Kadam was actually Chhota Rajan, who had allegedly impersonated another individual and deceived passport authorities.
The CBI said the fraudulently obtained passport was later used by Rajan as a genuine travel document.
After completing the investigation, the agency filed a chargesheet against Rajan on January 22, 2004. The trial continued for over two decades before the Special CBI Court pronounced its verdict on Thursday.
The court convicted Rajan on multiple charges and awarded him seven years of imprisonment along with the monetary penalty.
