The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) on Thursday engaged in a political confrontation over allegations of misappropriation of offerings made at Ayodhya’s Ram Temple, with both parties trading charges against each other.
BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi accused the SP of politicising the issue and alleged that the party was attempting to target the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi issue for political gains.
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Trivedi said the matter was being handled with sensitivity and according to directions issued by the Supreme Court.
He also attacked the SP over its past stand on the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, alleging that those raising questions today were the same people who had opposed the movement and had taken action against karsevaks in 1992.
Trivedi alleged that the party was now attempting to project itself as supportive of Lord Ram’s devotees, calling the move politically motivated.
Meanwhile, SP MP Awadhesh Prasad repeated his party’s allegations of large-scale theft of offerings made at the Ram Temple. He claimed that the alleged irregularities had continued since the early stages of temple construction.
Prasad accused BJP and RSS members of being involved in the alleged misappropriation and alleged that the Uttar Pradesh government was protecting those responsible.
He said SP president Akhilesh Yadav was among the first leaders to raise the issue of alleged financial irregularities related to temple donations.
The controversy comes amid a broader debate over allegations linked to the handling of temple offerings and demands for accountability in the matter.
