An Army Major was killed and two Lieutenants sustained serious injuries after their SUV collided with a camel and overturned multiple times near the Thaiyat Army area in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district early Friday.
The accident took place around 12:30 a.m., about 18 kilometres from Jaisalmer city, when the Army vehicle reportedly hit a camel that suddenly came onto the road. The impact caused the SUV to overturn several times before coming to a stop after skidding for nearly 100 metres, police officials said.
The deceased officer was identified as Major Hamza Arif, a native of Madhya Pradesh. According to police, he had married only a month ago.
ASI Jagdish Charan of Sadar Police Station said Major Arif was returning to the Army station after completing duty along with two other officers when the accident occurred.
All three officers were taken to the Army Hospital in Thaiyat following the crash. Doctors declared Major Arif dead, while the injured officers — Lieutenant Ayushman and Lieutenant Abhinav Rathore — are undergoing treatment.
The camel involved in the collision also died due to the impact.
Following the accident, rescue teams and military personnel rushed to the spot. The local police and Military Police have initiated a joint investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the crash.
Lt Col Nikhil Dhawan, PRO Defence, Rajasthan, said details of the incident were still awaited and further information would be shared after receiving complete inputs.
Officials are examining various aspects, including the circumstances under which the camel entered the road and other possible factors behind the accident.
