Trinamool Congress MP Shatrughan Sinha on Thursday defended Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s criticism of Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the alleged police action against protesters during the July 20 march to Parliament, saying Gandhi should have been allowed to complete his speech in the House.
Speaking on the controversy that erupted during the Lok Sabha debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, Sinha said Gandhi had raised concerns over the treatment of students and protesters and was attempting to highlight what he described as serious allegations of police excesses.
According to Sinha, Gandhi referred to reports alleging that demonstrators were subjected to physical assault, abusive language and action by police personnel, including individuals in plain clothes. He also said Gandhi questioned the reported use of pellet guns in Delhi and an alleged AK-47-related incident in Bihar, arguing that such actions could not occur without higher-level authorisation.
The Trinamool MP claimed that questions surrounding the police response required accountability and asserted that officers would not ordinarily take such measures without receiving directions from senior authorities.
Referring to the protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), Sinha also argued that the issue had attracted widespread public attention and deserved a full discussion in Parliament. He criticised the interruptions during Gandhi’s speech, saying the Leader of the Opposition should have been permitted to complete his remarks before the government responded.
Sinha said that allowing a full debate would have demonstrated the government’s willingness to address concerns raised by students and young people.
Drawing an analogy with Sir Isaac Newton’s third law of motion, Sinha remarked that suppressing an issue forcefully often results in a stronger reaction, suggesting that open discussion is a better way to address public grievances.
