India is poised to double its 5G user base to nearly one billion by 2030, Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said, underlining the country’s rapid digital transformation and its growing ambition to become a global leader in next-generation telecommunications.
Addressing an event, Scindia said around 500 million people in India are already connected to 5G services, a number he noted is comparable to the population of Europe. He expressed confidence that the figure would double over the coming years as digital infrastructure continues to expand across the country.
Emphasising the transformative role of technology, the minister said widespread digital access creates opportunities that drive inclusive growth. He pointed out that mobile phones are now in the hands of 1.33 billion Indians, while the cost of mobile data has fallen dramatically from Rs 287 per GB to around Rs 8 per GB over the past decade, making high-speed internet accessible to millions.
Scindia said India’s technological vision extends beyond expanding connectivity, with the government actively preparing the country to play a leading role in the global development of 6G technology.
He stated that India is participating in international standard-setting efforts through the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), contributing to the future framework of next-generation telecom networks.
Highlighting the government’s Bharat 6G Alliance initiative, the minister said India aims to integrate the physical, digital and intelligent ecosystems into a seamless communications network through 6G. He added that the country is now positioned to contribute to global technology standards at a level never achieved before.
Scindia also said the steep decline in mobile internet prices—down by nearly 97 per cent over the past decade—has significantly accelerated digital inclusion and the adoption of advanced communication technologies across the country.
