Women protesters were reportedly fired upon by Pakistani security forces during a demonstration in Kotli in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), with videos circulating on social media showing participants running for safety as gunfire erupted.
According to reports, the women had gathered to express solidarity with protesters in Rawalakot and Mirpur and to demonstrate against the alleged crackdown by Pakistani authorities in the region. Videos shared online purportedly show police opening fire as the protest was underway. The authenticity of the videos could not be independently verified.
One of the women participating in the protest was heard saying that they had joined the demonstration to support fellow protesters and would not be intimidated by the use of force.
The incident comes amid continuing unrest in several parts of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, where protests over alleged denial of basic rights and other grievances have intensified in recent days.
According to reports cited by the United Kashmir People’s National Party (UKPNP), around 40 civilians were killed and several others injured or detained between July 27 and 28 in Rawalakot, Mirpur and other areas. The organisation also alleged that more than 100 people have been killed and hundreds injured or subjected to enforced disappearance since June 5.
The UKPNP condemned the reported use of force against protesters, describing it as a serious violation of international human rights standards, and urged the United Nations, the European Union and the international community to support independent investigations into the incidents.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif defended the government’s action against the protesters, reportedly stating that he considered those participating in the demonstrations to be “enemies like India,” remarks that have drawn attention on social media.
