Two More Women Die After Childbirth at Bhilwara Government Hospital, July Maternal Death Toll Rises to Seven

Jaipur, July 31, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Rajasthan’s maternal healthcare system has come under fresh scrutiny after two more women died following childbirth at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital (MGH) in Bhilwara, taking the number of maternal deaths reported at the district’s largest government hospital this month to seven.

Hospital authorities said both women had undergone normal deliveries and were not categorised as high-risk pregnancies during antenatal care. However, each developed severe postpartum haemorrhage and could not be saved despite treatment.

One of the deceased, 22-year-old Sugna Mohan Bairwa from Kotri, had been referred to MGH from Shahpura after developing complications following a normal delivery. According to hospital officials, her blood pressure dropped sharply after childbirth. She was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where she later died.

Principal Medical Officer Dr Arun Gaur said Sugna suffered excessive postpartum bleeding, causing her haemoglobin level to plummet from 10 g/dL to 1.8 g/dL.

The second victim, 18-year-old Rani Bhura Banjara of Patel Nagar in Bhilwara city, also experienced severe postpartum bleeding after a normal delivery. Doctors said her condition deteriorated so rapidly that there was insufficient time to perform an emergency hysterectomy, a procedure often considered when medication fails to control life-threatening bleeding.

Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr Sanjeev Sharma said neither woman had exhibited high-risk indicators during pregnancy. An inquiry has been ordered to determine the circumstances leading to the deaths despite the availability of post-delivery monitoring and emergency care facilities. Investigators will review the patients’ medical records, sonography reports, treatment protocols and the exact causes of death.

Health officials recently screened 2,210 pregnant women across Bhilwara district, identifying around 500 as high-risk cases due to conditions such as severe anaemia, hypertension, diabetes, heart or kidney disease, previous caesarean deliveries and multiple pregnancies. Officials, however, noted that several recent maternal deaths involved women who had not been classified as high-risk.

The latest fatalities add to a series of maternal healthcare concerns across Rajasthan. In May, five women died after childbirth in Kota. In June, six women developed kidney failure following caesarean deliveries in Bikaner, with two later succumbing during treatment. Apart from the seven maternal deaths reported in Bhilwara this month, two more women also died while undergoing treatment in Banswara.

The recurring incidents have intensified concerns over the management of postpartum complications and emergency obstetric care in government hospitals across the state.
