India’s women wrestlers delivered an impressive performance at the 2026 U17 World Wrestling Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, securing one silver and two bronze medals to strengthen the country’s medal tally.
Nikita Sehrawat emerged as India’s top performer by clinching the silver medal in the 57kg category. She produced a string of strong performances to reach the final before taking on reigning U17 World silver medallist Epenesa Elison of the United States. Despite a determined effort, Nikita went down 0-6 in the title bout to finish with the runner-up honours.
Kamna Babal added a bronze medal in the 49kg division after displaying remarkable resilience. Following her semifinal defeat to Japan’s Saika Uchida, Kamna bounced back in the bronze-medal contest with a narrow 3-2 victory over Russia’s Irina Tsydeeva to secure a place on the podium.
India’s third medal came through Garima in the 73kg category. After suffering a close 5-7 loss to American wrestler Kaili Manuel in the semifinals, the former U15 Asian champion responded in dominant fashion. She overwhelmed Spain’s Paula Benaixa Perez 10-0 by technical superiority (VSU) in the bronze-medal bout.
Meanwhile, in the Greco-Roman competition, India’s Darpan Raju Chaudhari kept his medal hopes alive in the 60kg category by defeating Greece’s Pavlos Tsentidis 5-3 in the repechage round.
The performances underline India’s growing strength in age-group wrestling, with the country’s young grapplers continuing to make their mark on the world stage.
