The Bengaluru Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) after a 19-year-old student from Punjab was allegedly assaulted by four unidentified men following his participation in protests over the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) paper leak issue.
According to the FIR lodged at the Jalahalli Police Station, the victim, identified as Aman Deep Singh, was attacked late Thursday night near BEL Circle in Jalahalli while returning on foot after dinner. Police said he was walking from the BEL Circle service road towards MES Road when two motorcycles carrying four masked men intercepted him.
The complainant alleged that the assailants first confirmed his identity before verbally abusing him and questioning his participation in the NEET paper leak protests. They reportedly asked whether he wanted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to resign before allegedly assaulting him with a wooden log, primarily targeting his leg. The attackers fled the scene immediately after the incident.
Aman Deep Singh sustained a serious leg injury and is currently undergoing treatment. Following the attack, he approached the Jalahalli Police Station and filed a complaint.
Police have initiated an investigation and are examining CCTV footage from the area to identify the accused. Officials are also probing whether the assault was linked to the student’s involvement in the anti-NEET demonstrations. No arrests had been made at the time of reporting.
Meanwhile, the All India Students’ Association (AISA) alleged that members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) were behind the attack. In a statement, AISA claimed the assailants threatened the student over his participation in protests demanding accountability over the NEET controversy and raised slogans questioning his criticism of the Central government.
The organisation condemned the incident, described it as an attack on democratic dissent, and demanded strict action against those responsible. It also urged the Bengaluru Police and the Karnataka Home Department to ensure a swift and impartial investigation.
The alleged assault comes amid continuing nationwide protests and political debate over the NEET issue.
