Family members of Delhi Police personnel injured during the recent violence at Jantar Mantar have alleged that officers on duty were subjected to a violent assault after protesters allegedly breached security barricades and clashed with police.
Addressing a press conference in the national capital, relatives of the injured officers narrated their accounts of the incident and appealed for recognition of the risks faced by police personnel deployed during the protest.
The wife of an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), who has served in the Delhi Police for 33 years, said her husband had left for duty at Jantar Mantar on July 20 as part of the security deployment. According to her, he informed her during the morning that a large crowd had gathered and was moving towards Parliament.
She later learned that he had been admitted to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital after sustaining injuries. Quoting her husband, she alleged that the gathering turned violent after anti-social elements joined the protest. She claimed police personnel were attacked with stones, flower pots, slippers and shoes, and that barricades installed to secure the Parliament area were damaged.
The daughter of another injured police officer said her father, a Sub-Inspector, was deployed on the frontline near the barricades. She alleged that he had previously expressed concern that the demonstration no longer appeared to be solely a student-led protest.
According to her, her father was dragged by a violent mob near the protest stage on July 25 and remained unconscious for several hours at Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital before being discharged later that night.
Figures shared during the briefing claimed that more than 250 police personnel were injured during the July 20 violence. The damage allegedly included over 110 barricades, more than 300 body protectors, over 350 helmets, more than 50 shields, over 20 loudhailers, 10 handheld metal detectors, one X-ray baggage scanner and more than 25 government vehicles.
Authorities have not yet issued a comprehensive official assessment of the damage, while investigations into the violence and the circumstances surrounding the protest remain underway.
