Hyderabad Cybercrime Police have registered cases against Meta India head Arun Srinivas and several Facebook and Instagram accounts over the alleged circulation of morphed and objectionable content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the recent Cockroach Janta Party protests linked to the NEET paper leak controversy.
The cases have been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act following complaints filed by businessman S. Aravind Reddy and Telangana BJP activist T. Saikiran Goud.
According to the complaints, the complainants came across multiple Facebook and Instagram posts containing allegedly morphed, digitally manipulated or AI-generated videos and images depicting the Prime Minister in an obscene, derogatory and misleading manner.
The complaints further alleged that the posts were accompanied by offensive comments and indecent language directed at the Prime Minister and others featured in the content. They claimed that the material encouraged wider circulation and engagement, while potentially spreading misinformation and misleading the public.
The complainants also contended that such content could incite hatred, disturb public order, outrage public decency, defame public figures and promote hostility among different sections of society, thereby attracting provisions under applicable laws.
Saikiran Goud reportedly submitted a list of 20 Facebook and Instagram links along with his complaint and sought legal action against Meta for hosting the disputed content on its platforms.
Police have initiated an investigation and are working to obtain details of the social media accounts named in the complaints to identify those operating them. Authorities are also examining the nature and origin of the content as part of the probe.
The development comes shortly after Meta publicly expressed regret over an incident in which a video posted from the Prime Minister’s official account was briefly blocked on Facebook.
