A viral video showing an elderly woman being assaulted with a stick by a minor has prompted the Indore district administration to seal an illegally operated old-age home and relocate all 31 of its elderly residents to government-recognised facilities.
The action followed directions from Indore Collector Shivam Verma, who ordered an inquiry into the old-age home run under the banner of Maharana Pratap Welfare Society near the Marimata water tank.
A joint inspection conducted by officials from the district administration, the Social Justice Department and the Women and Child Development Department found that the facility was operating without the mandatory government permission.
Malharganj Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Nidhi Verma said the investigation confirmed that the institution was functioning illegally. She said the premises were being managed by Neelam Dubey and her associates.
According to the SDM, the land on which the facility operates had not been officially allotted for an old-age home and government records identify it in the name of the superintendent. Authorities have initiated proceedings to seal the premises and register an FIR.
Officials said all rooms at the facility have been sealed. Elderly residents who are medically stable have been shifted to the Nirashrit Ashram and Ganesh Old Age Home in Gandhinagar, while those requiring treatment have been admitted to a government hospital.
The video that surfaced on social media showed a minor repeatedly striking an elderly woman with a stick and pushing away others who attempted to intervene.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rubina Mijwani said the boy had been living at the old-age home for about five months after arriving there with his mother, who later died from burn injuries.
Neelam Dubey said she was not present when the incident occurred. She claimed that after serving food to the residents on Guru Purnima and leaving for her own meal, she was informed that the boy had assaulted the elderly woman. According to Dubey, the boy told her he reacted after the woman allegedly struck him on the head with a plastic tub.
The district administration has launched further legal proceedings, while police continue to investigate the incident and the operation of the facility.
