West Bengal has got its first dedicated National Investigation Agency (NIA) police station following approval by the state Cabinet, with the state government issuing the formal notification for its establishment on Thursday.
The new police station will function from the 16th floor of the NBCC building in New Town, Kolkata, where the NIA’s regional office is already located. According to the notification issued by the state Home Department, all NIA cases registered in West Bengal will now be handled through this police station.
The establishment of the facility follows the state Cabinet’s approval on July 22 and marks a significant administrative development for the central anti-terror investigation agency in the state.
Until now, despite conducting investigations in several high-profile cases in West Bengal, the NIA did not have its own police station in the state. As a result, First Information Reports (FIRs) relating to NIA investigations in West Bengal had to be registered through the agency’s headquarters in New Delhi before further legal proceedings could be initiated.
The agency has been pursuing the establishment of a dedicated police station in Kolkata for several years. However, the proposal remained pending under the previous state government. The move has now been cleared following the change in government in West Bengal.
The NIA began operations in the state in 2014 after taking over the investigation into the Khagragarh blast case. More than a decade later, it now has its own police station to facilitate registration and investigation of cases within the state.
The NIA already operates similar police stations in several cities across the country, including Mumbai, Chennai, Ranchi, Kochi and Imphal, in addition to its headquarters in New Delhi.
The notification comes days after the state Cabinet approved the proposal. The issue of law and order and security in West Bengal had also figured during Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent meeting with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
