A demonstration was held outside the Pakistan Embassy in Washington over the reported worsening humanitarian situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), with protesters raising concerns over alleged violence, casualties and restrictions during ongoing unrest in the region.
According to social media posts from the protest, demonstrators gathered near the embassy to draw attention to reports of deaths, injuries and alleged use of force by security personnel against protesters. Participants called for accountability and greater transparency over the developments in PoK.
The protest comes amid continuing tensions in the region, where clashes between demonstrators and security forces have reportedly led to multiple deaths and injuries. Reports have also alleged that security forces used live ammunition during parts of the unrest.
The protests in PoK have been linked to demonstrations led by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), which has raised several political, economic and governance-related demands, including concerns over public services and citizens’ rights. Reports have also pointed to disruptions in internet and mobile connectivity during the unrest.
International groups and rights observers have expressed concern over the reported violence and called for independent investigations into allegations of excessive use of force and civilian casualties.
The United Kashmir People’s National Party (UKPNP) had earlier alleged that around 40 civilians were killed and several others injured between July 27 and 28 in areas including Rawalakot and Mirpur. The organisation also claimed that the overall death toll since the beginning of protests could be significantly higher.
The UKPNP alleged that more than 100 people had been killed since June 5 and accused Pakistani security forces of serious human rights violations, including unlawful use of force and alleged enforced disappearances.
The allegations have not been independently verified, while authorities in Pakistan have yet to provide a comprehensive account of the reported casualties and events.
