Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid homage to legendary freedom fighter Shaheed Udham Singh on his martyrdom day, describing his life as an enduring source of inspiration for generations committed to safeguarding the nation’s honour and self-respect.
In a message posted on X, the Prime Minister said Udham Singh’s extraordinary courage and sacrifice would continue to motivate every generation of Indians to uphold the dignity of the motherland.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute to the revolutionary, calling him a symbol of unmatched bravery and patriotism. Shah said Udham Singh avenged the victims of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by assassinating Michael O’Dwyer in London, striking a significant blow against British colonial rule. He also highlighted Udham Singh’s association with the Ghadar Party and his role in inspiring Indians living abroad to participate in the freedom movement.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh remembered the martyr’s contribution to India’s independence struggle, saying his courage and supreme sacrifice formed a glorious chapter in the nation’s history and would continue to inspire future generations.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also offered floral tributes, describing Shaheed Udham Singh as a symbol of unwavering courage and unparalleled patriotism. She said his act of avenging the Jallianwala Bagh massacre upheld India’s honour and commitment to justice before the world.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath likewise honoured the freedom fighter, stating that his valour and sacrifice for the country’s independence would remain a timeless inspiration for serving the nation.
Shaheed Udham Singh was born on December 26, 1899, in Punjab. He is remembered for assassinating former Punjab Lieutenant Governor Michael O’Dwyer in London in 1940 in retaliation for the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre. He was executed at Pentonville Prison in London on July 31, 1940, and remains one of India’s most revered revolutionary freedom fighters.
