A jail warden posted at Central Jail, Ferozepur, has been booked for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 to return a mobile phone seized from inmates, police said on Thursday.
The case was registered by City Police, Ferozepur, on the complaint of the Assistant Superintendent of Central Jail following an internal inquiry that reportedly found the allegations against the official to be substantiated.
According to the complaint, the accused jail warden, identified as Rahul (Belt No. 2939), allegedly recovered a mobile phone from inmates but did not deposit it with jail authorities as required under the rules. Instead, he allegedly returned the device after accepting money.
The same mobile phone was later recovered during a search operation conducted at Barrack No. 2 in Block No. 1 of the jail premises on July 28, raising further suspicion over the alleged misconduct.
DSP Sukhwinder Singh said an inquiry conducted by Deputy Superintendent (Security) Ravi Kumar found the allegations to be supported by the findings. Based on the inquiry report, a case has been registered against the accused under Sections 7 and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Sections 48(2) and 42(1) of the Punjab Prison and Correctional Service Act, 2026.
Police said further investigation into the matter is underway.
