A Bihar Special Task Force (STF) officer accused of firing the fatal shot in the Bharat Bhushan Tiwari encounter case has been arrested by Bhojpur Police, marking a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the death of the accused man.
The arrested officer is the same official against whom Bharat Tiwari’s mother, Asha Devi, had levelled allegations, accusing him of killing her son. The officer has been taken into custody and further legal proceedings are underway.
The arrest comes days after Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary met Bharat Tiwari’s family and assured them that justice would be ensured in the case.
The family had earlier sought action against two officials allegedly linked to the encounter. However, relatives had expressed dissatisfaction after SDPO Rajesh Sharma, whose name was mentioned by the family, was transferred and posted as DSP in the Prohibition and State Narcotics Control Bureau in Patna.
Meanwhile, Jagdishpur SDM Sanjit Kumar, another official associated with the matter, was removed from his post and attached to the Patna headquarters following directions from Chief Minister Chaudhary.
A judicial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Bharat Tiwari’s death is already in progress. The latest arrest is expected to play a crucial role in determining the sequence of events and responsibility in the case.
Bharat Bhushan Tiwari, a resident of Bilauti village in Bhojpur district, was killed in a police encounter on June 17. According to the police version, he was armed and allegedly opened fire at the police team, following which officers retaliated and he was killed.
However, his family has disputed the police account, claiming that Bharat had tried to surrender and was shot despite being in police custody. A video purportedly showing the incident has also emerged, with the family alleging that the encounter was staged.
The ongoing judicial inquiry and legal proceedings are expected to establish the facts surrounding the encounter.
