Behind Seema Kaliramna’s historic bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 was an emotional journey marked by sacrifice, uncertainty and separation from her four-year-old son, Rudra.
The Indian discus thrower secured the bronze medal in the women’s event with a best effort of 58.65 metres at the Scotstoun Stadium, earning her maiden major international medal. While the achievement brought immense joy, Seema’s coach and husband Ravinder revealed that the couple had to compete with the pain of staying away from their young son.
“We missed our son a lot,” Ravinder said after Seema’s medal-winning performance. He explained that Rudra could not travel to Glasgow as he did not have a passport, while his own visa approval came only at the last moment.
Ravinder said his visa was cleared on the evening of July 28 and he travelled to Glasgow on July 29, leaving no time to arrange travel for their son. He added that Rudra watched the event from home and had already gone to sleep when he spoke to him after the competition.
Seema also spoke about missing her son and dedicated her medal to Ravinder for his constant support and guidance throughout her career, including her comeback after motherhood.
“My son is at home. I miss him a lot. Whenever I talk about him, those emotions come out again and again. Now I will go home and meet him,” she said.
The 27-year-old athlete also highlighted the challenges faced by sportspersons in securing financial stability. She said she had earlier applied for a government job but could not get one due to age restrictions.
“I do not have financial support, and that remains a big barrier. If I had a job, it would be extremely helpful,” she said.
Seema acknowledged the support provided by the Athletics Federation of India, Sports Authority of India, NCOE Patiala and JSW, along with her family.
She urged greater support for young athletes, saying every medal requires years of sacrifice, including managing financial difficulties, mental pressure, training requirements and nutritional needs.
