Former India captain Virat Kohli paid a heartfelt tribute to Ajinkya Rahane after the veteran batter announced his retirement from international cricket, describing him as the “safest pair of hands in the slips” and his favourite Test batting partner.
Rahane, who played a key role in India’s historic Border-Gavaskar Trophy triumph in Australia during the 2020-21 series, announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket on Thursday, bringing an end to a career spanning more than a decade.
Kohli, who shared several memorable partnerships and moments with Rahane in the Indian team, praised his former teammate’s contribution to Indian cricket.
“Jinks, congratulations on a great career, buddy. You’ve done wonders for Indian cricket, and you can be very proud of your journey. The safest pair of hands in the slips and my favourite Test batting partner. Wishing you well always. God bless,” Kohli posted on social media.
India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant also expressed gratitude to Rahane, highlighting his calm approach, selflessness and leadership qualities.
“It felt good to share the dressing room with you, Ajju bhai. Calm in every situation, selfless in every role and a leader by example. Thank you for everything you have done for Indian cricket. Wishing you nothing but the best for what’s next,” Pant said in a social media post.
Rahane made his international debut during India’s tour of England in 2011 and went on to represent the country in 85 Tests, 90 ODIs and 20 T20 Internationals.
He scored 5,077 runs in 144 Test innings, including 12 centuries and 26 half-centuries, while also accumulating 2,962 runs in ODIs. His final appearance for India came during the 2023 Test series in the West Indies.
Rahane’s most memorable achievement as Test captain came during India’s 2020-21 tour of Australia. Taking charge after Kohli returned home following the opening Test in Adelaide, where India were bowled out for 36, Rahane led the team to a historic 2-1 series victory.
Under his leadership, India secured a famous win at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and produced a remarkable victory at the Gabba, ending Australia’s unbeaten run at the venue and retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
