German luxury automobile manufacturer BMW has announced plans to reduce its workforce in Germany through a voluntary redundancy programme by the end of 2027, as the company responds to weakening global demand, rising costs and the industry’s transition towards electric mobility.
The restructuring plan, finalised in agreement with the company’s works council, will primarily affect employees in administrative and development roles. BMW said its manufacturing operations will not be impacted by the workforce reduction.
According to multiple reports, the programme is expected to result in nearly 8,000 job cuts in Germany. BMW currently employs around 150,000 people worldwide.
The decision comes at a time when Germany’s automotive sector is facing significant challenges, including slowing vehicle demand, intensifying competition from Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers, increasing production costs and the impact of US tariffs.
BMW joins other major German automakers that have recently announced restructuring measures. Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz have already unveiled plans to reduce tens of thousands of jobs, while Porsche, part of the Volkswagen Group, has expanded its restructuring programme with a target of reducing its workforce by around 20 per cent by 2035. Separately, workers at Audi’s Neckarsulm plant staged protests over restructuring proposals that could lead to the closure of one of Volkswagen Group’s German manufacturing facilities.
Although BMW had been considered more resilient than many of its domestic rivals, the company revised its profit outlook downward in June after reporting weaker-than-expected business performance in China, one of its largest markets.
Following the revised forecast, Chief Executive Milan Nedeljkovic said BMW would accelerate its cost-reduction initiatives, describing the transformation underway in the global automotive industry as fundamental to the company’s future. He said the restructuring measures were intended to strengthen BMW’s long-term profitability despite the difficult business environment.
BMW is scheduled to announce its second-quarter financial results on Thursday.
