Actor Umar Riaz has come out in support of his brother Asim Riaz amid the ongoing public controversy involving Asim and his former girlfriend Himanshi Khurana over allegations related to religious conversion.
Taking to social media, Umar criticised the use of religion in the controversy, accusing an unnamed person of using the issue to gain views and defame someone.
“SHAME ON YOU!” Umar wrote, while sharing a post that carried the message: “Using RELIGION as a BAIT to DEFAME someone!”
Although Umar did not name anyone directly, he appeared to take a dig at podcaster and actor Paras Chhabra, referring to him as “Podcaster X” and accompanying the reference with pig and laughing emojis.
The post comes amid an escalating war of words between Asim and Himanshi, who met and began dating during “Bigg Boss 13”. The couple separated in 2023, with religious differences reported among the reasons for their breakup.
The controversy resurfaced after Himanshi discussed her past relationship with Asim during a podcast hosted by Paras Chhabra. She spoke about their religious differences and said the situation had reached a point where she felt she was expected to change aspects of her faith and religious practices.
Asim subsequently denied ever asking anyone to change their religion. In a social media post, he said, “I never asked anyone to change their religion. Not once,” and accused the other side of using religion as a weapon. He also criticised Paras Chhabra in his posts.
Himanshi later responded by saying she had evidence to support her version of events. She claimed she possessed CCTV footage and recordings relating to the alleged conversion-related dispute and said she would no longer remain silent. She also alleged that she had faced violence during the relationship.
The claims and counterclaims have since triggered a fresh social media controversy involving the former couple and people associated with them.
