External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday and conveyed a “personal message” from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as the two sides reviewed bilateral cooperation and discussed regional and global issues.
Jaishankar said after the meeting that he briefed Putin on the deliberations of the 27th session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC).
“Pleased to call on President Vladimir Putin of Russia in Moscow today. Handed over a personal message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Jaishankar posted on X.
He said the discussions covered cooperation across a wide range of areas as well as important regional and global developments.
According to the Kremlin, Putin told Jaishankar that his visit reflected the longstanding and broad-based nature of India-Russia relations. He noted that the two countries continue to cooperate in areas including government-to-government ties, parliamentary relations and economic affairs.
Putin also highlighted the growth in bilateral trade this year, attributing the strengthening relationship in part to Modi’s personal attention to India-Russia ties.
“I would like to ask you to convey my best wishes to Mr. Modi. I hope to see him soon, as we planned, within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization,” Putin said, adding that the two leaders could potentially meet again later this year.
Earlier in the day, Jaishankar co-chaired the 27th IRIGC-TEC session with Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov.
Putin said the discussions had covered several important areas, including energy, fertilisers, nuclear cooperation and high-technology sectors. He particularly highlighted continued efforts to increase fertiliser supplies to India for the benefit of Indian farmers.
Jaishankar said he had a positive report to share on economic cooperation, nuclear energy, fertilisers and other areas. He said bilateral economic engagement had grown significantly and described India-Russia ties as a “strong, robust bilateral partnership”.
Jaishankar also said Modi was looking forward to meeting Putin at the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit and hoped to welcome the Russian President at the BRICS Summit in India.
