Music composer and singer Akhil Sachdeva has praised legendary ghazal singer Jagjit Singh for his exceptional ability to command an audience during live performances, saying he feels blessed to possess a similar quality.
Sachdeva, who composed the song ‘Piya Ghar Aaya – Homecoming’ for the recently released Emraan Hashmi-starrer Awarapan 2, spoke to IANS in Mumbai following the film’s release.
Reflecting on his own connection with audiences, Sachdeva said music transcends language and that his stage presence has helped him establish an emotional connection with listeners.
“I have realised one thing, as you said, there is no language for music. The charm of music and the people who have seen me perform on stage, they are connected to my aura and my charm on stage, which is very rare in artists,” he said.
Drawing a comparison with Jagjit Singh, he recalled the late singer’s remarkable control over audiences during performances.
“I have seen it in Jagjit Singh. If he would close his fist, the whole hall would be silent. If he would open his fist, the whole hall would clap,” Sachdeva said.
He described the ability to connect with audiences as a rare blessing and said his journey as a stage performer began well before he entered playback singing.
“I was a stage artist before becoming a playback singer and whether people believe it or not, I have been working for 15 years. I feel I have inspired a generation at least,” he said.
Sachdeva added that an artist’s greatest achievement is to touch people emotionally through music.
“If you inspire someone and if you touch someone’s emotions through music, you become someone’s home. It’s a big deal,” he said.
Awarapan 2 is a sequel to the 2007 film Awarapan, with Emraan Hashmi returning as Shivam Pandit. While the original film did not perform strongly at the box office upon release, it later developed a loyal following and attained cult status, particularly for its music and Hashmi’s performance.
Awarapan 2 is currently playing in cinemas.
