New Delhi, August 24, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
The Income Tax Department on Monday reminded taxpayers earning income from business or profession who are not covered by tax audit that August 31, 2026 is the deadline for filing income tax returns for Assessment Year 2026-27.
In a post on X, the department urged eligible taxpayers to complete their filings before the deadline and log on to the e-filing portal to submit their returns.
“31st August 2026 is the due date for filing ITRs for AY 2026–27 for taxpayers with business or professional income who are not subject to audit,” the department said.
The department also highlighted the filing progress, stating that more than 2 crore ITR-3 and ITR-4 returns had been filed on the e-filing portal as of August 20. Overall, more than 6.5 crore income tax returns for AY 2026-27 had been filed.
More than 5.9 crore ITR-1 and ITR-2 returns were submitted by the July 31 deadline, according to the department.
Taxpayers in the non-audit category can use the applicable return form based on their income and status. These include ITR-3, ITR-4, ITR-5 and ITR-7.
ITR-3 applies to individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) having income from a proprietary business or profession. ITR-4 is a simplified return form for eligible taxpayers meeting prescribed conditions.
ITR-5 is meant for entities such as firms, Limited Liability Partnerships and cooperative societies, while ITR-7 applies to trusts, charitable institutions and other entities required to file returns under specified provisions of the Income Tax Act.
The department has been urging taxpayers to file within the prescribed timelines to avoid last-minute congestion on the e-filing portal and possible consequences associated with delayed returns.
